Mobile Gaming Moving Beyond the Deck

Posted by YDogg on February 8th, 2008
Good news for folks in the mobile game industry. According to a new report from Parks Associates titled "The New Frontier: Portable and Mobile Gaming", off-deck sales of mobile games will grow from less than 10% in 2007 to nearly 30% in 2012.

This move to off-deck will enable the mobile game market in the US to grow from $700M in 2007 sales to $1.7B in 2011.

“Off-deck marketing and distribution, combined with new business models such as mobile game advertising, episodic content delivery, and micro-payments, will rekindle industry growth," said Yuanzhe (Michael) Cai, director of broadband and gaming at Parks Associates.

The article from eMarketer highlights how off-deck sales help the mobile gaming market grow in a few ways:

- Independent developers and publishers who don't have to have their games approved by carriers can potentially offer a wider range of game types, bringing in more gamers.

- Off-deck transactions could also mean more money to game publishers by reducing the carriers' cut. Similarly, such transactions could lower prices for consumers, prompting more sales.

This is music to Movaya's ears as we plan to help power a significant percentage of that $600M in off-deck game sales in the US in 2012.

The Impact of Microsoft-Yahoo Tandem to Mobile Space

While the world awaits Yahoo's answer to the controversial $44.6 B bid from Microsoft, many analysts speculate its impact to the mobile space, particularly to Google.

Mobile media measurement firm M:Metrics predicts that this tandem, as expected, will result domination of the mobile messaging category (IM and email). Its combined U.S. subscribers will be more than 16 million while Google is stuck at 5.4 million.

But its combined strength is not enough to defeat Google in the mobile search category with its 7.7 million U.S. subscribers. Still, it will give them the chance to close the gap.

No wonder Google is pissed off about this acquisition. Too bad, it cannot even make a bid to Yahoo for fear of antitrust issues.

Knee-powered Charger in the Works

Indeed, our body is a wonderful and mysterious creation. In the words of popular singer John Mayer, it is a wonderland.

No wonder a group of American and Canadian scientists has created a three-and-a-half pound knee brace that can turn the power of our legs to energy. According to one of the researchers, Dr. Max Donelan, of Simon Fraser University in Canada:
"People-power is a desirable thing to tap into it because we are these incredible batteries. We store enough energy in fat to charge a 1000 kilogram battery. With our device, you could walk for one minute and get ten minutes of talk time on your cellphone."
Unfortunately, its development proves to be very costly. Even without this technology, a knee brace alone is worth $1,000.
