Glu 2007 Results

Posted by YDogg on February 11th, 2008

US mobile game publisher Glu Mobile (NASDAQ: GLUU) announced details of the company's sales results for Q4 2007 and for all of 2007. For the 4th quarter of 2007, Glu reported a net loss of $861,000, on revenues of $18.1 million. In the same period last year Glu lost $2.3 million on revenues of $14.3 million. For the full year, Glu lost $3.3 million on revenues of $66.9 million. In 2006, the company lost $12.3 million on revenues of $46.2 million.

The company said it is growing on three fronts—by securing long-term licenses, expanding geographically and consolidating market share.

Glu is hoping to grow through acquisition as well, having targeted British rival Superscape Group. (LON:SPS) If the acquisition goes through, Glu would become the second-largest supplier of mobile games in the U.S., and be close to market leader Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS). During the call, Glu said that its offer to buy Superscape expires Friday, and they will announce the outcome on Monday.

"We closed a solid 2007 with a strong fourth quarter," said Greg Ballard, Glu's chief executive officer. "Over the past 12 months, we significantly raised our market position by securing world-class, long-term licenses, expanding geographically and consolidating market share. Our title line-up for 2008 provides a solid foundation for our success in the coming year. In addition, we are focused on increasing our global opportunities with the addition of MIG and the proposed acquisition of Superscape."

Mobile Edge CuteBug Hipster designed by Maddie PowersLooks like Valentine’s Day will be greeted by Mobile Edge just in time with their new ladies vertical messenger bag known as the CuteBug Hipster. Authentic pulp icon images from the 1940s and 50s were used on the bag, along with a pair of “Lucky Seven” dice to up the style ante.

Those who love vintage images on their products will definitely like the CuteBug Hipster, helping ladies stand out from the crowd and turning the tide against boring and repetitive designs.

The pink Hipster model will retail for $69.99 each and is readily available while Black with Yellow trim and Green with Yellow trim colors will be rolled out later this spring.

Congrats to Cellfire

Posted by YDogg on February 11th, 2008

Cellfire, the mobile coupon firm, has raised $12 million in its third-round of funding. The round was led by Silver Creek Ventures, and was joined by return backers Menlo Ventures and Storm Ventures.

According to the release, proceeds will be used to expand the company’s sales and marketing efforts, along with increasing product functionality, business development and partnership activities.

Cellfire, founded in 2005, says it has distributed more than eight million coupons worth more than $24 million in discounts. Stores accepting Cellfire coupons include 1-800-flowers, Hollywood Video, Quiznos and Supercuts.

The funding comes as no surprise to us at the MobilePhoneBlog as we have been big fans of Cellfire for awhile.

"We are thrilled that Silver Creek led this round of financing given their strong track record of success in the wireless space," said Brent Dusing, CEO of Cellfire. "We have come a long way over the past three years, and yet there are many more opportunities that we see in the future. The additional funds will help us leverage the significant market opportunity at our door step."

Is Sonim XP1 Really Indestructible?

Posted by The Mobile Technology Weblog on February 11th, 2008
sonim xp1.gif

The so-called indestructible Sonim XP1 cellphone is at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to challenge all skeptic journalists and bloggers to torture this very durable device, as part of its "World's Toughest Phone Tour".

Well, the people behind this Push-To-Talk enabled GSM phone are so confident about their product for it was able to withstand shots from Glock 9mm and Remington Rifle, hammer, car cement mixer, oven, freezer, dirt, dust and other extreme temperatures.

Designed for outdoor sports enthusiasts, Sonim XP1 must be really tough but the tour is not yet over so there's still a chance to prove them wrong. Perhaps subjecting it to "Will it Blend" torture might help generate more publicity.

Mobile Messaging Abuse On the Rise

Posted by The Mobile Technology Weblog on February 11th, 2008
mobile technology

As expected, mobile spam, phishing and virus attacks will increase this year. However, the attacks vary from region to region. A new study conducted by messaging security company Cloudmark shows mobile attacks in the U.S. are fairly primitive or harmless compared to more "developed" regions (in terms of mobile technology) like Asia and Europe.

E-mail-to-mobile attacks are the common types in the U.S. Because text messaging through Internet is enabled in all major U.S. operators, it has become a cost-effective weapon for many scammers. In fact, more than 25% of SMS sent through Internet are categorized as e-mail-to-mobile attacks. Here are other stats to consider:
  • In 2007, 1.1 million SMS spam messages were received in the U.S., a 38 percent increase from 2006
  • In 2008, the number is expected to grow by almost 50 percent to 1.5 million
These are mostly unsolicited ads or "Google pages" scams but with the developments on m-commerce and mobile marketing mobile attacks are expected to be more sophisticated as well.

Sony Ericsson C902i- View Specs

Sony Ericsson today announced the C702a and C902i Cyber-Shot, two additions to its camera phone range.

The C702a Cyber-Shot is engineered to take pictures in any position. The camera key and the active lens cover are specifically designed and placed so users can stabilize the 3.2-megapixel camera and capture photos with one hand. Combined with steady-grip materials and a wrist-strap provided in-box, the C702a users won't have to worry about dropping it.

The C702a integrates GPS and a range of location-based imaging services that add a new dimension to taking and managing photos. When consumers take a picture, information about where they are in the world is automatically added to the image. So they can always share photos according to where the shots were taken.

Google Maps for Mobile locates and guides users to where they want to go. GPS pinpoints locations for turn-by-turn voice guidance to one of up to 20 million points of interest.

The C902i Cyber-Shot offers Face Detection and Auto-Focus capability to detect and focus on the face of the subject rather than the background, for sharp and high quality pictures. The phone incorporates the latest in lighting technology - Photo Flash - giving better quality pictures even in low-light conditions. A light solution has been added to the BestPic feature - which takes nine photos in quick succession, chooses the best photo and deletes the rest. x-Pict story adds music and transitions to a gallery of photos and automatically creates multimedia slideshows.

The C902i comes with a 160 MB built-in memory - the equivalent of storage for up to 100 full resolution photos - plus the possibility to add more memory with the Memory Stick Micro (M2).
