Research: More Than 90 Million 4G Subscribers Worldwide in 2013

The total number of 4G subscribers worldwide, including both LTE and WiMAX, is expected to exceed 90 million in 2013, but a number of milestones must be passed en route, according to a new forecast from ABI Research. At the end of 4Q 2007, says the firm, there were nearly 3.4 billion mobile subscribers worldwide, with 2.7 billion on GSM/EDGE/GPRS networks.

The GSMA is pleased that the European Telecommunications Standards Institute has adopted the technical standards governing Mobile Near Field Communications (NFC) services supported by the Association and its members. The completion of the core of the technical standards removes a potential obstacle, enabling mobile operators to prepare for the rollout of contactless payment services and other applications that make use of this flexible short-range radio technology.

Vodafone Launches Vodafone Branded 227 and 228

Vodafone has introduced two new entry-level handsets under its own brand. The Vodafone 227 is a clamshell, while the 228 is in the slider phone. Both handsets will be available in Europe and emerging markets and feature core text and voice services as well as a color display.
