Soon, the air up there is no longer free from annoying ringtones, incessant text messaging and calls from our mobile phones. Dubai-based Emirates is the world's first commercial airline to offer
inflight mobile phone service.
According to a
news article, the historic first authorized call via cellphone happened 30,000 feet above the ground from Emirates Airbus A340-300 aircraft flying from Dubai to Casablanca.
Since it's still in the initial stage, each passenger is just allowed 5 to 6 calls every flight. Moreover, sending and receiving SMS is also permitted on board.
We know mobile phones can really be annoying so Emirates set up some house rules to follow. For one, no passenger is allowed to make phone calls on night flights and all mobile handsets should be in silent mode during the entire flight to avoid disturbing other passengers.
