New from Amazon.com - TextBuyIt
Posted by YDogg on April 6th, 2008
Amazon TextBuyIt, which launched on Tuesday, is a service that enables consumers to find and buy products sold by Amazon using text messaging.
The service lets you search for an item using keywords, such as those in an Amazon web search, get pricing and then buy an item from the search results. You can also order by texting specific information like the ISBN or UPC barcode.
To try it out, simply text the name of a product, its description or its UPC or ISBN to 262966 (that's "Amazon" on the keypad).
If Amazon stocks matching items, the service returns two results at a time. Shoppers can immediately buy one of the selections by texting back the number "1" or "2," or they can ask for more by texting the letter "M." The service handles additional commands like "help" and "additional details" that you can read about here.
New TextBuyIt customers will be prompted to enter the e-mail address associated with their existing Amazon account plus a shipping zip code. The service then calls them and walks through the checkout process using an automated voice system. Shoppers get confirmation by text message and e-mail.
I tried out the service this week by texting "Diner Dash" to 262966. (Diner Dash is a popular computer game that also works on handheld and mobile phone platforms.)
I immediately received a message that said:
"Reply w/1 or 2 to buy, m for more, h for help
1)Diner Dash-DS $19.99
2) Diner Dash 1 and 2 Pack-VISTA $19.99
I then got a second text message with more command instructions.
I didn't bother getting additional listings or more info or try to buy it, but I'm sure it works great. Not surprisingly, if you do the same search on Amazon.com's website, the first two search results are the same.
I can see a ton of value from the service, especially for price conscious consumers who want to make sure they are getting a good price on items when they are out and about.
You can use the Amazon TextBuyIt service on the following US carriers: AT&T, Alltel, Boost, Midwest Wireless, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and Virgin Mobile. I couldn't find any information from the FAQ on whether they plan to support this service outside the US as well.
