Base on the spy picture provided by symbian freak, nokiaport.de has done a rendering image for the upcoming Nokia XpressMedia phone. The phone will feature a next generation S60 touch user interface, which has a codename called “Tube”.

According to a new report from the telecom research firm Berg Insight, more than 100 million mobile subscribers in Europe will use location-based services by 2012. Mapping, navigation and search are believed to become the top applications, followed by social networking and tracking. “All the pieces needed for successful LBS are more or less in place now”, said André Malm, telecom analyst, Berg Insight.

Jott Networks announced the ability to reply to emails using its voice-to-text technology on BlackBerry smartphones from Research In Motion (RIM). The new application offers a way to verbally reply to email messages. BlackBerry smartphone customers with Jott accounts can download a small application file from the Jott.com website by pointing the BlackBerry Browser to www.jott.com/bb.

Two U.S. national newspapers are reporting that they have been informed that the FCC is planning to adopt a proposal that would see the implementation of an SMS based national alert system. The 4 major U.S. carriers have all said that they would likely participate in the program, if approved.

Today Nokia announced that it has settled with the former employees of its now closed Bochum plant in Germany to the tune of 200,000,000 euros. As part of the agreement, EUR185 million of the settlement will be offered as severance to the plant's 2300 employees.

NTT Docomo, Japan's largest carrier, has announced a new trial of its Mobile Fragrance Communication service, which uses a phone's infrared port to transmit downloaded fragrance recipes to a scent cartridge. Scents can be downloaded as 'playlists' or linked to videos and ringtones.

Nokia launched worldwide Mobile Games Innovation Challenge, a global competition with 70,000 euro in prizes. The Mobile Games Innovation Challenge seeks the best in groundbreaking ideas and game concepts from the brightest and most creative minds in mobile gaming today.
The three most innovative game concepts will be offered Nokia Publishing pre-production contracts, targeting publication of their winning concept on the corresponding Nokia device platform. In addition, the first winner will be awarded 40,000 euro, the second 20,000 euro, and the third 10,000 euro to enable the participant to further develop the concept.
Beginning immediately, developers wishing to compete for the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge can submit their game concepts online at http://developer.n-gage.com/innovation. Gaming concept submissions will continue through August 20, 2008. The winners will be chosen by the external panel of judges and announced during a special award ceremony at the Nokia Games Summit in Rome, Italy, October 29-30, 2008.
