AT&T retail stores in Alaska are now drop-off sites for Cell Phones for Soldiers (CPFS), a charity that collects and recycles mobile phones so it can provide U.S. military families with free phone cards. The company is accepting donated phones at 15 stores across Alaska. This follows the recent acquisition of Dobson Wireless, which added more stores to the AT&T retail footprint - and more locations for the national recycling program.

Router and gateway specialists Billion have launched their 3G broadband router, the BiPAC 7402GX, which features compatibility not only with ADSL2+ for wired broadband but a USB port for external 3G HSDPA modems. Moreover, the 7402GX is capable of managing both connections simultaneously, using the cellular link as a backup should the landline connection fail; alternatively, it could be used to provide ad-hoc connectivity to multiple users when in hotels or otherwise travelling (as long as there’s a cellphone signal and a mains power supply).

Featuring a four-port 10/100 switch, WiFi b/g, firewall and VPN functionality, the 7402GX will work with 3G/HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE, GPRS or even basic GSM dial-up connections, although I wouldn’t want to be sharing one of the slower options from that list with many other people.
-
Dual WAN interfaces for ADSL2+ and 3G connections
-
Auto fail-over feature to ensure an always-on connection
-
High-speed Internet access with ADSL2/2+; backward compatible with ADSL
-
USB 2.0 port for plugging a 3G/HSDPA modem as backup (Available from your service provider)
- 802.11g wireless AP with WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK support
-
Wi-Fi Protected Setup feature makes setting up a secure network quick and easy
-
Supports 16 IPSec Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnels
-
SOHO firewall security with DoS prevention and SPI
- Secured VPN with powerful DES/3DES/AES
-
Quality of Service control
-
Syslog monitoring
-
Supports IPTV applications
The Billion BiPAC 7402GX is available now, priced at around £110 ($217/€137).

Every once in a while, I run across a human-interest story that's both touching and sad. It's also not often we hear of a mobile network operator doing the right thing by someone, either.
The report from FOXNews is that an 80-year old widower was calling his wife's voicemail on Verizon Wireless daily-just to hear her say her name. However, in a recent upgrade of the Verizon Wireless voicemail system, her greeting was erased!
Fortunately, the fine folks at Verizon Wireless found an old archived recording of his deceased wife saying her name and restored it to the voicemail system. Now the widower can continue to hear her wife's voicemail greeting—at least until the next Voicemail upgrade.

Charging cellphone is no big deal if you're in a place with steady supply of electricity. But there are places on this planet where it is of serious concern given the scarcity of electricity.
You might remember Karaj, a small village in India where its residents have to
walk about 20 kilometers just to charge their mobile phones.
The good news is that there are a number of solar chargers developed specifically to answer this concern. One such product comes from G24 Innovations and its lightweight
G24i Solar Charger Series, family of solar chargers that work using the power of light (indoors or outdoors) and is initially available in 1/2 watt and 1 watt configurations.
Its product called G5 is created for developing markets and claims to extend talk time up to 15 minutes after an hour of charging. The G10, on the other hand, can double talk time after one hour of charging. Both can also charge other gadgets like MP3 players and digital cameras.
Though I haven't personally tried these products, it simply shows there are now alternatives to electricity that might further extend the use of mobile technology in the far-flung areas.
