Mobile Social Networking Becoming More Popular

Posted by Budi Putra on April 27th, 2008

As the world’s subscribers reached more than 3.3 billion cellphone users now, no wonder the Internet companies move their products and services to the cellphone, including social networking services. At least 950 million will goes social with their mobile phone in 2012, said a report last month.

The concept of using social networking websites from a mobile phone is fast catching on in the USA, as all tier-I and tier-II operators now offer social networking applications. Support from mobile operators expects to directly impact application discoverability, provide marketing support, and drive growth in the U.S. mobile social networking markets.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan finds that revenue from on-deck mobile social networking services in the U.S. expect to reach $ 412 million in 2012. Additional revenues can also be expected from mobile advertising.

Yeah, it’s the big challenge for the social networking sites to create their friendly-mobile service versions and having more creative on proposing its business model.

Cell Phones: The Ring Heard Around the World

Posted by YDogg on April 27th, 2008

Thanks to Alexander Bosika, Co-Founder, MobileMonday Toronto, for sending us the link to this great documentary produced by the CBC: "Cell Phones: The Ring Heard Around the World"

This fascinating documentary takes viewers on a journey through cell phone culture, showcasing its numerous functions around the world, including a reference to the early 80's when bigwigs like Gordon Gecko (pictured) first used them on the silver screen.

Lots of great statistics and history about the cellphone including a remarkable story of a Seattle woman who was trapped in her car for 8 days, but luckily survived when authorities were able to find her by tracing her cellphone to the accident location.

One fact, that completely caught me by surprise, was that the camera phone is only 11 years old. It was invented in 1997 by Philippe Kahn. Seems to me that it has been around a lot longer.

If you like technology, cellphones, and history, check out the video on the site.

Mobile Instant Messaging Set to Challenge SMS Traffic

Posted by Budi Putra on April 27th, 2008

It’s the good news for me. I really hate to see that we just used the next generation of cell phone or smart-phone mostly for texting! The sophisticated of phone features would be useless, isn’t it? We don’t need EDGE, 3G or HSDPA capabilities to send the SMS, right?

Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) is set to cannibalize SMS (texting) and eventually email from PC, a survey from TNS Technology has found. The TNS Global Telecoms Insight (GTI) study, which interviewed 17,000 respondents across 30 countries, has found that once mobile users adopt MIM it overtakes other messaging tools to become the primary non-voice method of interacting – with potentially dramatic consequences for service and network providers’ revenue.

Among those who use MIM, it is the most used feature on their phone: 61% use it daily, compared to only 55% who use SMS daily and only 12% who use email on their mobile.

Yes, I often to use MIM (especially Yahoo Messenger and BlackBerry Messenger) to communicate with my friends, instead of SMS. It’s extremely cheap and effortless!

Let’s move on!

Rumor: RIM Developing iBlackBerry?

Posted by Budi Putra on April 27th, 2008

It seems that Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at RIM, should try to practice on how to type on the touchscreen phone in the near future. Despite the fact that he once said he didn’t like to type on a piece of glass, but a rumor said that his company is now developing an-”iPhone killer” handset.

… RIM has a skunkworks product dubbed “AK” (which stands for “Apple Killer”), and that apparently it’ll be touchscreen.

As a BlackBerry user, I was so curious to know more about the touch-screen BlackBerry. I hope this rumor will come true. And it would be dubbed as iBlackBerry? -)
