Atheros offers low power in GPS handsets

Posted by Budi Putra on May 6th, 2008

Do you know where you are? GPS, or global positioning systems, can tell you about it accurately. Yeah, it can put you on the map electronically — even into your hand. The advance mobile users really love this feature. Atheros Communications, Inc. announced a new innovation in this field.

Atheros offers a new member of its Radio-on-Chip for Mobile (ROCm(r)) family of GPS solutions that targets mobile phones, Personal Navigation Devices (PNDs) and Personal Media Players (PMPs).

GPS was originally intended for military applications, but sincethe 1980s, the the system made available for civilian use and then evolved for business use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day.

Atheros’ new solution consists of its second-generation, single-chip GPS receiver, the AR1511, and companion ORION 3.0 software suite. This combination is ideally suited for integrating advanced navigation functions into mobile devices, with state-of-the-art Assisted GPS (AGPS) technology, advanced parallel search, and industry-leading tracking sensitivity of -160dBm, which together enable the most rapid and accurate location determination while conserving device battery power.

“With the AR1511 and ORION 3.0 combo, Atheros is delivering state-of-the-art AGPS for today’s mobile phone, PND and PMP users, enabling quicker fix times that result in extended battery life,” said Greg Winner, general manager of Atheros’ GPS business unit. “Unlike most GPS silicon providers, we offer both standalone and hosted designs that enable our customers to add GPS to virtually any type of mobile consumer device.”

Qt 4.4 Brings The Best Of Web And Native Applications Together

Posted by The Mobile Technology Weblog on May 6th, 2008
screen_texteditsmartphone.jpg
Today, Trolltech is announcing the availability version 4.4 of the Qt framework. While Qt-pronounced "cute"-has always been a great cross-platform tool for generating a consistent UI across many different platforms, Trolltech has added a number of features to advance their vision of Qt everywhere.

While you can read the press release for some of the other cool things Qt 4.4 will enable, perhaps my favorite is the ability to mix elements of DHTML and C++ thanks to integration of the Webkit into Qt. Webkit is the browser built into Apple's Safari web browser, the Apple iPhone, and many millions of Nokia smart phones. It's possible to easily mix web and native code to provide a more consistent user experience. See full article.

Phonemag Hands On Video on HTC Touch Diamond

Posted by Kim Poh Liaw on May 6th, 2008

Here is a quick hands on video on the new HTC TouchFLO 3D UI, overall the transition between the menu is pretty impressive, although we still can see some lagging on the Windows Mobile. The most funny part is when the HTC staff accidentally jump out from the TouchFLO to the original Windows Mobile interface, someone is actually screaming.
