Samsung F480 Tocco Gets an Unboxing And First Impressions

Posted by Kim Poh Liaw on May 28th, 2008

SlashGear has just gave an unboxing video on the Samsung F480, which is being marketed in Tocco (means Touch in Italian) branding. Despite its slim 11.6 mm body, the F480 also boasts all the multimedia functions you would expect from a premium Samsung mobile. This includes 240 MB of internal music memory, a memory card with up to 8GB storage, an integrated FM radio, a 5 megapixel camera featuring auto focus and a CMOS video lens.

What has been perhaps most surprising is how well the Tocco’s haptic feedback works.  Samsung are now calling it “differentiated tactile technology” and describe it as a “tangible and pleasing feedback sensation”; for once, it actually adds something to the usability of the cellphone rather than merely being a vibrating annoyance.

BREW Mobile Platform extends the widely deployed BREW Client’s rich set of services and APIs, with new enhancements in platform capabilities, multimedia and content support, access to device databases, connectivity support, touchscreen user interface development and more. BREW Mobile Platform’s highly optimized and integrated support for Flash technology provides an unprecedented level of access to these platform services from Adobe ActionScript, enabling Flash developers to create standalone applications that integrate mobile device functionality with Web content and services.

BREW Mobile Platform will be supported by development tools provided by both Qualcomm and Adobe. Native application developers can leverage an expanded and integrated set of tools available from Qualcomm, including integrated support for the popular Eclipse and Visual Studio Integrated Development Environments. Flash designers and developers can use Adobe’s existing Flash development tools, including Adobe Flash CS3 Professional, Adobe Device Central CS3 and other popular tools in Adobe Creative Suite 3 to deploy rich applications based on Flash technology. Qualcomm and Adobe are working together to provide an increasingly streamlined developer workflow with subsequent releases of their respective tools.

“Qualcomm strives to stay ahead of the growth and evolution in the wireless industry by providing an increasingly robust development platform. Our BREW Client technologies are present on millions of mass-market handsets worldwide, and BREW Mobile Platform will expand these capabilities while fully embracing support for Adobe’s Flash technology and future roadmap,” said Bobb Briggs, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Internet Services.

The first release of BREW Mobile Platform with Adobe Flash technology is expected to be available on Qualcomm chipsets in the fall of 2008. Additional information on BREW Mobile Platform will be available at Qualcomm’s BREW 2008 Conference, May 28-30, in San Diego, Calif.

We hired women designers that know style and are very current on what’s hot and what’s not. Over the years they have realized what customers want and need. Incorporating subtle features like a removable cosmetics pouch, or a lipstick or mascara holder, and styles and colors only a woman would appreciate make our Women’s Collection stand apart from the competition.

Apple Seeks Patent for Solar-Powered Mobile Devices

Solar-powered Apple devices may be on the horizon, according to patent filings by the Cupertino-based company. The patent suggests that Apple may contemplate integrating a layer of solar cells underneath a device's liquid crystal display, possibly used in iPhones, iPods or MacBooks.

Apple products, such as the iPhone, have screens that are exceptionally large for portable devices. According to the patent, the solar panel would be stacked behind the LCD display, absorbing light rays that pass through the display.

It won't be the first time a company tried to integrate solar capabilities into a phone. Motorola received a patent, filed in 2001, for LCDs that allow more light to pass through than previous designs. Other approaches, said the Motorola patent, had resulted in small amounts of power being generated that only added incremental boosts to power-hungry cell phones.

Motorola said technical problems were noted by the limited area for solar-panel surfaces, the durability of the panels, and other issues. Traditionally, only six percent of light rays passed through due to the reflective nature of LCDs. Its new ways increased the pass-through to 75 percent.

Some small devices such as wristwatches or calculators are solar-powered, noted Michael Gartenberg, JupiterResearch analyst. The potential has only recently emerged for larger portable devices to be energized by the sun. One possibility, he suggested, was that solar power, at least in the short term, could be employed for short-term recharging or in other supplementary ways, rather than as the exclusive power source.

Google Shows Off ‘Android’ Software for Mobile Phones

Posted by Mobiledia on May 28th, 2008

Google today showed off its Android mobile phone software system, appearing to mimic Apple's iPhone. But Google officials downplayed the notion that they will face off against the iPhone in the handset market.

The demonstration in San Francisco represented the most extensive public look so far at Android - an open-source platform under development by Google and a number of partners in the Open Handset Alliance.

The features included a way to unlock phones by drawing a specific shape on the touch screen instead of entering a password; bookmarks for favorite websites on the device's home page; a "compass" tool that automatically roams with the phone while a user looks at photographic images of a city map; a magnifying tool to zoom in on Web content; and a mobile version of the video game "Pac Man."

With Android, the company seeks to extend the browser to handheld devices, a capability currently limited to systems such as iPhone, said Vic Gundotra, Google engineering vice president. "We believe over time, the browser on mobile devices will be the entry point for many, many applications."

Android doesn't represent Google's countermove against the iPhone, Gundotra argued. "I wouldn't say that at all. I think the iPhone is just a world-class device with a great Web browser that delivers in many respects on one of Google's key goals: To bring the Web to the mobile device," Gundotra said. "We wish every mobile phone was as good as the iPhone."

Google also hopes that programmers will create products that will run on Android. It expects to generate revenues via Android by extending the reach of the Internet to handheld phones. Google sells Internet-based ads, applications, appliances and license fees.

Several handset makers, including Samsung, HTC and LG, are among the 34 partners that Google has recruited to help launch Android. The project was first announced nearly seven months ago and is due to hit the market some time during the final six months of this year.

Mobile Edge laptop bag concepts TSA approved

Posted by Matthew Olivolo on May 28th, 2008

Mobile Edge submitted three new design concepts to the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) in an effort to help make traveling through airport screening checkpoints easier and quicker. We know how daunting those long lines at the airport can be, and this is a way to help alleviate those long lines.

TSA agent searches through laptop bag.The TSA sent out an official request (RFI) to leading laptop bag manufacturers to make the “perfect laptop bag” in which the TSA will approve themselves. Of course the design team at Mobile Edge was at the top of their list and jumped all over that request.

Without giving our competition too much information, we submitted three designs that are sure to be approved through the TSA. Anything we can do to help relieve some of the wait when traveling through airport screening checkpoints will help.

One of the guidelines the TSA had was to create a laptop bag that would open all the way up so the user would not have to take their laptop completely out of the bag. This would in turn help make the line move quicker, helping passengers get to their terminals in a timely manner. This would remove one additional step we have to take when traveling.

One thing is for sure, Mobile Edge will have TSA approved laptop bags very soon. Once they are approved from the TSA, we will make sure our customers are aware of these new and innovative laptop cases. Stay tuned for more information . The TSA will announce which designs they approve over the next few months!
