Logitech Pure-Fi Mobile

Posted by YDogg on June 2nd, 2008

Looking for a cool Father's Day gift idea? Check out Logitech's new portable Bluetooth speaker which will let Dad listen to his favorite tunes on his mobile phone -- even when his phone is in his pocket.

The Logitech (NASDAQ: LOGI) Pure-Fi Mobile boasts four 2-inch speaker drivers--two active, two passive--and a rechargeable battery that will deliver 12 hours of AC-free playback time. In addition to supporting wireless streaming from A2DP-enabled audio players, the Pure-Fi Mobile can double as a standard Bluetooth speakerphone.

"Millions of people now use a mobile phone to listen to music. If you're one of those people, now you can toss your ear buds aside and pump up the volume," said Mark Schneider, vice president and general manager of Logitech's audio business unit. "So when you're at a party, at the park, or just hanging out at home, your mobile-phone music will always sound great when you use the Pure-Fi Mobile speaker system."

The product isn't available quite yet but according to Logitech's site, it will sell for $150 and be available sometime this month. You can get detailed product information here.

Top Selling Phones on Amazon.com

Posted by YDogg on June 2nd, 2008
One way I keep up with the phones consumers are buying these days is to visit Amazon.com and check out their bestselling list.

Blackberry has 3 in the Top 10 including the #1 selling phone - the BlackBerry 8310 Curve. There are two other Smartphones in the Top 10 which means half of the top 10 selling phones on Amazon.com are Smartphones.

I don't have specific data to back this up, but I bet if you looked back even a year ago, the percentage of Smartphones in the Top 10 was significantly lower. This trend will continue as the price point of Smartphones drops and consumers realize that they WANT and NEED to do more than talk and text on their cellphones.

Only surprising thing to me on this list is that the LG Vu shows up at #8 and #10. I haven't heard a lot about this phone but the reviews are solid and it looks like a great device. Next time I'm at the AT&T store, I'm going to check it out.

New NVIDIA Tegra Brings Multimedia to Mobile Devices

Posted by Kim Poh Liaw on June 2nd, 2008

Today, NVIDIA introduced the Tegra family of processors, a single-chip computer capable of the rich high definition and internet experiences on small pocket type devices. NVIDIA Tegra is a tiny computer-on-a-chip, smaller than a US dime (10-cent piece), designed from the ground up to enable the “visual PC experience” on a new generation of mobile computing devices while consuming the smallest amount of power.

The NVIDIA Tegra 650 processor is the second product in the Tegra line, the first being the NVIDIA Tegra APX 2500 processor, which is enabling the next generation of Windows Mobile smartphones. With the launch of this new processor, the NVIDIA Tegra products will reach consumers towards the end of the year.

“Creating Tegra was a massive challenge. Our vision was to create a platform that will enable the 2nd personal computer revolution - which will be mobile centric, with devices that last days on a single charge, and yet has the web, high definition media, and computing experiences we’ve come to expect from our PC,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO at NVIDIA. “Shrinking down a 50 watt PC architecture will not create the discontinuity this industry needs. The culmination of nearly 1,000 man years of engineering, Tegra is a completely ground-up computer-on-a-chip architecture that consumes 100 times less power. Mobile internet and computing devices built with Tegra are going to be magical.”

NVIDIA Tegra is a heterogeneous processor architecture with multiple processors, each architected for a specific class of tasks - an 800 MHz ARM CPU, a HD video processor, an imaging processor, an audio processor, and an ultra-low power GeForce GPU These processors are used together or independently to deliver a wonderful experience while utilizing a minute amount of power.

NVIDIA Tegra 650 also features:

  • All-day media processing, for 130 hours audio, 30 hours HD video playback
  • HD image processing for advanced digital still camera and HD camcorder functions
  • Optimized hardware support for Web 2.0 applications for a true desktop-class internet experience
  • Display support for 1080p HDMI, WSXGA+ LCD and CRT, and NTSC/PAL TV-Out
  • Direct support for WiFi, disk drives, keyboard, mouse, and other peripherals
  • A complete Board Support Package (BSP) to enable fast times to market for Windows Mobile-based designs

“With NVIDIA’s Tegra processor line, we will continue to see impressive mobile innovations in Windows Mobile products,” said Todd Warren, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s mobile communication business. “Microsoft is dedicated to providing people best-in-class mobile experiences, so that people can carry a single device for work and play.”

AT&T Settles Lawsuit Over 3rd-Party Cell Phone Fees

Posted by Mobiledia on June 2nd, 2008

AT&T customers who have seen mysterious charges for ringtones and other content on their monthly bills may be eligible for refunds as part of a class-action lawsuit settlement.

Customers will able to claim refunds for charges that appeared on up to three of their cell phone bills between Jan. 1, 2004, and May 30, 2008, according to Jay Edelson, lead counsel for the plaintiffs. Edelson's firm has filed similar suits against Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel and T-Mobile.

Vendors of ringtones and daily text message services with horoscopes and jokes solicit customers to sign up by entering their phone numbers on websites or by sending text messages. The charges, which can be hidden or poorly explained, show up later on cell phone bills, often as recurring charges.

The carrier keeps some of the fee and passes the rest to the content provider.

AT&T now requires customers who sign up for third-party services with recurring fees to confirm by replying to a text message. It also requires the content providers to send monthly reminders with instructions on how to unsubscribe from such services.

"AT&T has taken aggressive action to put industry-leading safeguards in place to protect our customers from unauthorized changes from third parties. We believe this settlement is consistent with that approach," said AT&T spokesman Marty Richter.

Richter had no estimate for how much the settlement will cost AT&T. Given that the company already let customers contest the charges, he said the number who will get refunds through the settlement will be small.

The settlement was approved preliminarily on Friday by the Superior Court of Fulton County, Ga. A final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled Dec. 8. Claims under the settlement must be filed within 90 days of the final approval of the settlement.

Notifications will soon go out to 70 million current AT&T Mobility customers.

Motorola Good 6.0 Turns Smartphones into Mobile Laptops

Posted by Mobiledia on June 2nd, 2008

Motorola today announced the upcoming availability of Good Mobility Suite version 6.0 which will provide organizations with more secure and manageable mobile access to enterprise information and applications. Good 6.0 will let smartphone users access data and applications behind corporate firewalls.

The Good Mobile Connection feature is an attempt to transform smartphones into mobile laptops, said Dan Rudolph, Director of Product Marketing for Motorola Good Technology Group. He said it's the first "managed service" VPN as it allows users to connect to any TCP-based resources, like networked PCs or file servers.

"The mobile VPNs on the market right now simply don't work well," said Rudolph. "The user experience can be awful because you have to constantly re-login to the VPN and repeatedly reset networking configuration screens when you lose coverage."

Good Mobile Connection uses the company's network optimization center infrastructure, which allows the VPN session to continue during gaps in service coverage. The connection is secure, and users doesn't have to go through any extra steps, Rudolph said.

Another addition to the suite is Good Administration Center, which lets IT departments easily manage a mobile fleet. From a Web-based portal, IT can enforce security policies, push and update software, and even turn off smartphone Bluetooth ports.

There is also a robust reporting center, Rudolph adds. For example, IT departments will be able to determine how many smartphones are on AT&T's network, information that might come in handy during data plan purchasing negotiations.

Good 6.0 is expected to be available later in 2008 through resellers, carrier reseller partners and directly through Motorola Good Technology Group.
