AT&T Launches Encryption Services to Help Businesses Secure E-Mail and Data

Posted by Kim Poh Liaw on June 3rd, 2008

AT&T has announced the availability of managed security services that help businesses protect their data - AT&T Encryption Services. AT&T Encryption Services is focused on the protection of information by providing encryption services and management of digital signatures “in the cloud”.

Some of the capabilities of AT&T Encryption Services include e-mail confidentiality to help prevent unauthorized parties from accessing critical messages and attachments, authentication of the e-mail sender, as well as non-repudiation: a validation of the integrity of the e-mail message and its contents that ensures the recipient that the message was not modified.

The AT&T Encryption Services portfolio has additional features including:

  • Encrypted Mail: Developed to encrypt e-mail messages and attachments on the personal computer, this offer supports Outlook, Lotus Notes, Outlook Express, BlackBerry and Webmail.
  • Encrypted Mail Gateway: An enterprise policy-management filter transparently determines whether e-mail should be encrypted. It features industry-trusted encryption standards such as PKI, X.509 and S/MIME and includes a message-pickup center for nonsubscribers.
  • Encrypted Mail Exchange: This enables businesses to establish groups within a message-exchange platform, which provides full encryption services for e-mail and e-mail attachments.
  • Encrypted Documents: This feature establishes the secure exchange of sensitive information between an individual and a user group by encrypting folder or network drives and all of the data contained within them.
  • Encrypted Document Delivery: This offer provides the functionality to replace regular postal communications used for statements, invoices and notices with secure, signed and trusted e-mail messages and statement notifications.

AT&T’s managed security services portfolio is centered on the principles of delivering and leading the market with in-the-cloud security solutions to help enterprises reduce costs and remove the dependency on hardware and software. AT&T’s strategy for security is to provide a “defense in depth” approach to security, with features built into the various network layers, applications and supporting processes. CSR Combines Bluetooth, Bluetooth low energy, GPS, FM Radio into One

Posted by Kim Poh Liaw on June 3rd, 2008

CSR today announced the launch of its seventh generation BlueCore silicon. BlueCore7 is the world’s first device integrating Bluetooth v2.1+EDR, Bluetooth low energy, eGPS (enhanced Global Positioning System), and FM transmit and receive technologies on a single chip.

CSR has integrated Bluetooth low energy, eGPS and FM Tx and Rx technologies into BlueCore7 alongside an enhanced Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR radio which delivers +10dBm Tx and -91 dBm Rx. These enhancements help BlueCore7 to extend the overall range and across-body performance to provide better audio quality (think handset on one side of the body and headset on diagonally opposing ear). BlueCore7 allows the Bluetooth and FM radios to work without interference, either independently or together to allow users to stream FM radio from a handset to a pair of Bluetooth headphones.

In April, CSR gave the world’s first public demonstration of Bluetooth low energy technology. Bluetooth low energy (previously known as Ultra Low Power Bluetooth or Wibree) uses fewer frequencies to make connections while retaining the proven robustness of Bluetooth. BlueCore7 is available in QFN and WLCSP packaging and will be in volume production from Q4 2008.

Tetris Mobile Still Going Strong

Posted by YDogg on June 3rd, 2008

AT&T (NYSE:ATT) announced the top selling mobile games from their wireless store for the first quarter of 2008.

Tetris is still #1.

I am not surprised, but that fact alone tells you a lot about the state of the mobile game market. I mean Tetris is a fun game, but the #1 selling game? No way.

This is all about discovery and merchandising. Taking a quick look at the list, I think the only game that has been released in the last year is Guitar Hero III Mobile. All of the other titles have been around for awhile.

AT&T's Top Selling Games in Q1, 2008:

1. Tetris
2. Bejeweled
3. PAC-MAN by Namco
4. Wheel of Fortune 2007
5. Diner Dash
6. Midnight Pool
7. Ms.PAC-MAN by Namco
8. World Poker Tour - Texas Hold ‘Em
9. World Poker Tour 2
10. Guitar Hero III Mobile

Compare the above list to the bestselling downloadable PC casual games on Big Fish Games. The oldest game on their Top 10 list was released on May 14, 2008 - not even a month ago.

Two downloadable platforms with a similar consumer make-up with dramatically different games being downloaded. One lives in a frictionless open environment and one lives in a weirdly fragmented and friction rich environment. Watch this space.

TryPhone Update - New Phones to Test Drive

Posted by YDogg on June 3rd, 2008

We first reported on TryPhone last December, when the service was first introduced by MobileComplete. For those of you who need a refresher, TryPhone gives you the ability to try cellphones before you buy. Use their interactive online virtual handsets to test-drive mobile devices, applications, content and services, as well as watch demos - right from the comfort and convenience of your own computer.

As they say on their site:
"No pressure, no salespeople, no product uncertainty and no features you don't understand. Try it, then go buy it... on your terms."

When they first launched, you could try out 4 phones. I checked in on them today, and they are now up to 15 phones, including the Palm Centro, and the LG Shine.

They are still in beta so there are some kinks to work out, but this is a cool idea and a nice service. We may add their widget to the blog.

CSR Combines Bluetooth, GPS and FM Radio on a Single Chip Photo 1

Engineers have created a way to integrate Bluetooth wireless, eGPS and FM radio technologies on a single chip, reducing power consumption and improving voice quality for the growing in-car handsfree market.

Developed by CSR, BlueCore7 integrates Bluetooth v2.1+EDR, Bluetooth low energy, eGPS (enhanced Global Positioning System), and FM transmit and receive technologies on a single chip. It reduces the power, size, cost and complexity of adding multiple radios into a mobile phone.

Bluetooth is the most successful short-range wireless technology in use today, with attach rates in handsets expected to reach 55 to 60 percent in 2008. BlueCore7 offers Enhanced Bluetooth v2.1 + EDR radio to deliver better overall range and audio quality. It also includes AuriStream voice CODEC, producing fixed line call quality when using a Bluetooth connection. Inbuilt speaker drivers also allow users to connect headphones directly to the device.

BlueCore7 allow users to stream FM radio from a handset to a pair of Bluetooth headphones. By combining a transmit and receive FM radio with Bluetooth, handset designers can use less space, fewer components and lower cost.

"Building upon our strengths in Bluetooth and our expertise in embedded wireless technologies, BlueCore7 delivers a robust and comprehensive solution that boasts the industry's leading power and performance figures," commented Matthew Phillips, CSR Senior Vice President. "We have seen high demand from our customers for Bluetooth, GPS and FM functionality, coupled with an industry need to keep cost, size and power consumption of embedding such technologies to a minimum."

BlueCore7 will be in volume production from Q4 2008.

Verizon Wireless Offers RemoSync Push Email Solution

Posted by Mobiledia on June 3rd, 2008

Verizon Wireless today announced RemoSync, an application offering a direct push e-mail solution. Developed by Remoba, RemoSync lets consumers who use Microsoft Exchange Servers manage their email, calendar and contacts in real-time on their phones. Direct Push Technology automatically displays email when the application is launched.

Previously, if customers wanted access to their corporate email, they needed to have a smartphone like a Palm, Windows Mobile or BlackBerry device. RemoSync can be used with ordinary phones.

"The addition of RemoSync gives our business customers the added features of a business device on the phones they carry with them every day," said Andrea Caldini, Executive Director of Verizon Wireless. "We expect the average customer to use between one and two megabytes of data per month, making RemoSync an affordable solution for businesses."

To use RemoSync, users need either access to a Microsoft Exchange Server or need to be using Verizon Wireless' Hosted Exchange solution. RemoSync is available for $9.99 monthly access.
