HTC today unveiled the Touch Pro, its newest Window Mobile 6.1 business device with 3D touch user interface, desktop-like browsing and 5-row sliding QWERTY keyboard.

The Touch Pro includes a new touch-sensitive control for device interaction. It offers advanced touch screen technology with TouchFLO 3D, HTC's 3D touch interface. TouchFLO 3D uses one touch to scroll through common tasks like messaging, calendar appointments or making calls. Music, photos, contacts and surfing the web are also responsive.

"HTC Touch Pro is for those customers that demand the ease of use and enjoyment of TouchFLO 3D and want the styling of the Touch Diamond but also need the powerful mobile business experience that HTC delivers," said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corp.

The Touch Pro delivers broadband-like speeds with HSDPA 7.2 Mbps. A new browser lets users view and navigation websites designed for PCs. Surfers can zoom and pan websites with one-hand and view content created to fit the display. Turning the device sideways automatically rotates the webpage view from a portrait to landscape.

An HTC-developed, YouTube application is integrated for watching user generated video. Google Maps for Mobile is included for mapping and traffic data.

Crafted to fit comfortably in the hand, the Touch Pro's five-row QWERTY keyboard makes tasks like composing email or working on Microsoft Office documents quick and easy. Built-in TV-out functionality, users can deliver PowerPoint presentations from the handheld.

The built-in 3.2-megapixel camera includes an optical auto-focus lens for clear and consistent photos. The 2.8-inch display provides web browsing and viewing of snapshots.

The HTC Touch Pro will be available in major European, Asian and the Middle East markets in late summer. The North American and Latin American versions of Touch Pro will be available later in 2008.

AT&T Speeds Up 3G Network

Posted by Mobiledia on June 4th, 2008

AT&T today announced it has upgraded its 3G wireless network to increase downlink speeds up to 1.7Mbps, a 20 percent increase over previous top speeds.

The increased speeds are the results of recent network enhancements the company will complete by the end of the month. HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) is a mobile broadband technology that is comprised of two wireless broadband protocols, known as HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) and HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access), that operate on 3G mobile devices. HSUPA will result in uplink speeds of 1.2Mbps, a 50 percent increase over its previous peak uplink speeds of 800Kbps.

AT&T's 3G network is available in more than 275 major U.S. metropolitan areas. By year-end, the company plans to offer 3G service in nearly 350 major metropolitan U.S. areas.

Verizon Wireless in Talks to Buy Alltel

Posted by Mobiledia on June 4th, 2008

Verizon Wireless is close to sealing a roughly $27 billion deal to buy Alltel, the country's fifth-largest wireless carrier by subscribers, aiming to overtake AT&T as the top U.S. wireless service.

If consummated, Verizon's move would be the biggest telecom deal since AT&T bought BellSouth at the end of 2006. Adding Alltel's 13.2 million customers to Verizon Wireless' 67.2 million would create the largest wireless carrier in the country, far ahead of AT&T with 71.4 million subscribers. Verizon would take on about $23 billion of Alltel debt, a surprise to many analysts as it came only seven months after Alltel was taken private by TPG Capital and GS Capital Partners.

A deal could save Verizon Wireless more than $1 billion per year. Verizon Wireless now pays hundreds of millions in roaming charges every year to Alltel.

Verizon had been considered a natural suitor for Alltel before it was sold to private equity as Verizon and Alltel use the same CDMA wireless network technology. Sprint Nextel, which has been struggling with customer losses, also uses CDMA.

Both Verizon Wireless and Sprint have roaming agreements allowing their customers to use Alltel's network in areas where they do not have coverage themselves.

T-Mobile Gives Families a Break on Unlimited Plan

Posted by Mobiledia on June 4th, 2008

T-Mobile today announced it would allow subscribers to its "unlimited" calling plan to include family members for half price. Customers can add up to four additional lines to an unlimited plan for $49.99 per month each. Competitors charge full price for additional lines on unlimited plans.

Last February, Verizon Wireless unveiled a plan with unlimited nationwide calling for $99.99 per month and was quickly matched by competitors. T-Mobile's plan, which costs the same, also includes unlimited text, picture and instant messaging. Verizon charges $119.99 for that plan.

The introduction of unlimited plans initially depressed the stocks of carriers, but AT&T and Verizon have said that the plans actually increase their sales. More consumers upgrade to unlimited plans from cheaper plans than downgrade from older, more expensive plans.

"Mobile phones are a lifeline for busy families today, and T-Mobile wants to be right alongside them whether at home or on-the-go to help them stay connected," said Robert Dotson, president and CEO, T-Mobile USA. "This new unlimited calling and messaging plan for families delivers great value, and frees families to connect the way they want to for all their important relationships."

Since few customers use all the monthly minutes on their cheaper, limited plans, the unlimited plans are a good value only for a few percent of consumers. However the plans have become a major point of comparison and competition for the carriers.

“We are committed to expanding the Nokia Media Network, which is growing rapidly in both reach and quality, so we can drive greater results for our brand advertisers,” said Mike Baker, vice president and head of Nokia Interactive Advertising. “The MOSH audience, comprised of the heaviest users of mobile content around the world, is particularly desirable to many of our top advertisers.”

MOSH has launched its “Spotlight” program, a ‘paid placement’ advertising initiative, where advertisements are Spotlight-branded and placed above all organic browse, search and contextual placements.

BLUE LION mobile, a Germany-based developer of interactive mobile applications, was both an early uploader to MOSH as well as partner in the Spotlight Program with BLUE LION’s mobile software, “qeep.” Qeep is a Java-based multilayered mobile social networking application that includes free messaging, photo blogging and multiplayer gaming. “We are very happy that qeep has been a pioneer of the Spotlight Program,” said Christian Schulte, co-founder and managing director of BLUE LION mobile. “Thanks to MOSH, downloads of Qeep have escalated significantly. We will therefore be expanding our participation in the Spotlight program.”
