BlackBerry Thunder Gets An Official Leaked

Posted by Kim Poh Liaw on June 8th, 2008

Just few weeks after the BGR mocked up image on the BlackBerry full touch screen smartphone, they have now posted the official picture of the BlackBerry Thunder, which is not too far from the mocked up image.

blackberry-thunder-1

It is not sure that if this will be named as BlackBerry 9500. The new touch screen phone from BlackBerry will be the first keyboard-less messaging phone offered by RIM. If they have the soft keyboard working as well as the hardware keyboard, this will definitely help them to fill up some market share in competition with the new Apple iPhone and HTC Touch Diamond.

RIM Hopes to Steal Some of Apple’s “Thunder”

Posted by The Mobile Technology Weblog on June 8th, 2008
BB_Bold.jpg

Taking a cue from the success of Apple's iPhone, Blackberry has revealed their latest technical wonder, The Thunder. Those expecting a plethora of hardware buttons will be disappointed to hear that Blackberry has designed their latest mobile technology entry to make use of a touch-screen interface. Based on early photos we can safely conclude that send, end, back, menu, volume, lock, and play / pause buttons will supplement the touch screen interface.

The biggest disadvantage thus far is that apparently the unit is going to be a Verizon exclusive here in the United States (and Vodafone abroad). With a third quarter release date (Q3) it's looking like the unit will be a reality this Fall. Research in Motion aficionados may have noticed that this date comes hot on the heels of RIM's other big release: The Blackberry Bold (9000 series). Not only will the Bold look more traditional with a physical QWERTY thumb-board, it is set to be released for AT&T, and T-Mobile.

In addition these new beauties (the Bold for certain) will run the Blackberry OS 4.6. Prices for the Bold (pictured above) are estimated at around $350 while the Thunder's MSRP has yet to be released.

Korean-handset maker Samsung today announced its Omnia (SGH-i900), a business device running on Windows Mobile 6.1 with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel and Word).

The Omnia has an ultra-slim 12.5mm design. The centerpiece is a 3.2-inch WQVGA (240 x 400 px) touch screen from Synaptics. With haptics, vibrations give users feedback when the display is touched. Tap, sweep, drag and drop operations let consumers navigate through the TouchWiz UI. An accelerometer auto-rotates the display when tilted on the side. A trackpad and on-screen QWERTY keyboard are included as well.

The Omnia comes with a built-in 5.0-megapixel CMOS camera with auto-focus, facial and smile detection, auto-panorama shot and image stabilizer. Internal memory configurations of 8 or 16GB are expandable with microSD memory cards.

Internet access is fast with up to 7.2Mbps on HSDPA and Wi-Fi. An FM tuner and GPS reception are standard for navigation and geo-tagging.

The Samsung Omnia will be launched in Southeast Asia starting late June with European sales starting in July.

Swarovski Dior Phone Inlaid with 640 Crystals, Costs $26,000

Swarovski Dior Phone Inlaid with 640 Crystals, Costs $26,000 Photo 1

French fashion-house Christian Dior has teamed up with Swiss-jeweler Swarovski to create a crystal-studded version of its new "My Dior" luxury phone.

Dubbed the "Lady Dior," the crocodile skin exterior is inlaid with 640 stones of 3251 carats of Swarovski crystals. The handset includes a 2.6-inch touch screen with QVGA resolution, 2.0-megapixel camera, ringtones. Users can pick up or make calls with a miniature phone the size of a USB key, and use the main phone for more complicated functions - ideal for women who don't want to rummage through their bags to find their phones.

"In the same way that we have developed our watch and jewelry lines, we want to increase sales with the phone," said Sidney Toledano, Christian Dior CEO. "What really convinced us was seeing the attention people in emerging markets pay to buying a phone, by selecting the color and design."

Luxury goods makers have started venturing into mobile devices. After Dolce & Gabbana sold $315 million worth of its Gold Motorola RAZR phones, Italian fashion house Prada soon followed suit, launching a phone with South Korea's LG Electronics.

But Dior's new phone is priced higher than rivals, closer to Nokia's premium line Vertu, which also starts in the $7,900 range. Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Giorgio Armani all have phones out that cost around $950.

Taking nearly three years to design, the handset is made by a small French manufacturer ModeLabs. My Dior starts at $5,500 or $7,900 and up while the Swarovski-studded version will be sold for $26,000.

My Dior will be marketed as early as June 2008 and begin selling shortly thereafter.
