Dialogue brings single click payments to Payforit

Posted by Kim Poh Liaw on July 10th, 2008

Mobile payments specialist Dialogue Communications is spearheading yet more Payforit developments this month with the launch of Payforit single click payments. The Payforit payment mechanism allows consumers to pay for content, goods or services purchased on the mobile internet or web via their mobile phone, currently up to the value of £10. The new single click feature allows customers to buy from an internet page with one easy click, without having to additionally click-thru the standard Payforit pages on every occasion.

Guiom Peersman, Dialogue’s MD, introduced the idea of integrating single click purchases into the Payforit framework to mobile operators earlier this year, and he believes it will further enhance the payment mechanism: “Single click purchases are widely available on the web, on sites such as Amazon and iTunes, so there is no reason why mobile internet services should be any different and I think it is something mobile users are also starting to demand. The single click option will not only improve the user’s experience of Payforit but it will also encourage repeat purchases and give users the power to tailor their buying preferences.

The single click function works from the Payforit pages once the user has selected the item they wish to buy. Initially users will be required to go through the normal payment flow for their first purchase but once they are comfortable with Payforit, they will be given the opportunity to use the single click version of Payforit in the future.

Dialogue is looking into opportunities to launch similar mobile billing initiatives around the globe, in particular in Australasia and Africa where a solution similar to Payforit has already sparked interest in the market.

iPhone App Store - Already Big Numbers

Posted by SideShow on July 10th, 2008
Its July 10th, one day before the official release of iPhone 2.0 software, which includes the iPhone App Store. This allows all the rest of the world to build and sell applications for the iPhone. Anticipation is high for this iPhone junkie.

Big numbers already for games:
6 of the top 10 applications are games, and 10 of the top 20. Keep in mind, the only downloads so far are from application developers who got the early copy of the new iPhone software.

But there must be a lot of them: over 8,000 copies of the number one application, Super Monkey Ball, were downloaded by 4pm PST today. At $10 USD, that is $80,000 in revenue in one day for one game (again, only application developers downloading at this point, and still 8 hours left in the day). That is a great day for Sega (Sega Mobile recently signed on with Movaya to sell off-deck), congrats to them for jumping out of the gate here.

Off-Deck is here for games:
Certainly the iPhone store using iTunes as a distribution channel is unique, and no other OEM of phones (Nokia, Samsung, LG, Moto, Sony, etc...) has this type of connection to consumers. So, on the one hand you could look at this and say that Apple is a de facto carrier and this may not represent true off-deck selling. On the other you could say Apple has now proven unequivocally that there is appetite for content on phones sold thru a third-party, off-deck merchant, which Apple is, and that the carriers have nothing to do with this consumer behavior. Both are true, and we can add that as a case study of off-deck sales, this is not definitive. Throw in the fact that it only covers one carrier, iTunes has an established user base and the actual applications are side-loaded (loaded onto the iPhone only when tethered to the computer), and it truly represents a unique marketplace.

But, for those of us living and breathing on the emergence of an off-deck mobile gaming marketplace soon, there are some great signs of life here. For one, its obvious a segment of consumers WANT (not just need) applications on their hand held device, and not just any application, but GAMES. If Steve Jobs is correct, Apple will have top line revenue of 1 billion in the first year, and based on my loose math, 300-400 million of that will go towards games, if not more. And that is for one phone for one carrier. Those are some good numbers.

Most importantly, though, it perfectly illustrates that if you give the people a kick ass device and an easy way to download well developed games, they will download them. Now, lets see how the OEMs of the other 99.5% of the handheld market respond.

ATT Starts to Double the Data Capacity of its 3G Network

Posted by Kim Poh Liaw on July 10th, 2008

AT&T has started doubling the data capacity of its 3G markets, and nearly half of all cell sites will receive additional 3G capacity by the end of the year. The additional capacity will help accommodate the anticipated growth of 3G subscribers over the next several years.

Between 2005 and 2008, AT&T will have invested more than $20 billion in network improvements and upgrades - an average of $5 billion a year. Much of this network investment has gone to build out the 3G broadband data network, which today is available in 296 major metropolitan markets. In addition, the company is deploying additional 3G coverage using 850 megahertz (MHz) spectrum that is now available from the recent sunset of its older TDMA network. This spectrum extends farther and better covers the interior of buildings.

Sneak peak - Mobile Edge Checkpoint Friendly laptop bags

Posted by Matthew Olivolo on July 10th, 2008

You are the first to see the new Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bag designs by Mobile Edge. As previously mentioned in this blog, the Transportation Security Administration requested laptop bag manufacturers to create Checkpoint Friendly laptop bags. The TSA had clear guidelines for manufacturers to follow, ensuring airport security screeners could easily scan the laptop while it was still inside a laptop bag.

The design team quickly responded and came up with three new designs, a Backpack, Messenger Bag and Briefcase as designed to accommodate a laptop with a screen up to 15.4″.

Tested on airport X-Ray machines, this new collection of laptop cases are TSA compliant. Here is a sneak peak just for Mobile Edge Blog readers…
