Heathrow Express Launches Mobile Ticketing in UK

Posted by Kim Poh Liaw on July 13th, 2008

Atos Origin has successfully completed roll-out of a new, innovative mobile ticketing service for Heathrow Express train network between London Heathrow’s airport terminals and Paddington Station in Central London. Passengers on the Heathrow Express can now have their tickets sent directly to a mobile phone or PDA, so they do not have to queue to collect tickets at the station before they travel.

This is the first implementation of AVANTIXMetro, an e- and mobile ticketing solution designed and built by Atos Origin. It allows individual and corporate customers to book online through the Heathrow Express website. When making a booking, customers can opt to receive either a bar-coded e-ticket that is registered to their mobile phone, or a self print version of the ticket. Both types of ticket are then scanned and validated on-board the Heathrow Express train. Paper tickets can still be purchased on the train direct from the train manager.

George Fripp, Heathrow Express international corporate account manager comments that, “Most of our customers are incredibly busy professionals that use our service because it’s the most convenient way to get to and from Heathrow Airport in just 15 minutes. E-ticketing builds on that by taking the hassle out of booking journeys and making their travel even more seamless. All you need to do is book, board the train and go. It’s as simple as that.”

The terminal used by train staff is built on the Casio IT-3000. It is a rugged, versatile industrial data terminal with an integrated thermal printer. Its versatile communications options include standard Bluetooth and IrDA, and a PCMCIA slot allowing GPRS and WLAN communications. With the built-in printer and colour touch screen making it ideal for mobile sales, ticketing, parking enforcement and service management.

According to Frost and Sullivan, the average power degradation in a lithium ion battery can be approximately 50% of their charging capacity after two years. As most cell phone users notice after a short time of ownership, the battery in their phone does not hold a charge like it did when it was new. They must recharge their phones more and more often and be more conscious of saving power.

MTI Micro’s strategy is to provide Mobion portable power products for use in the multi-billion dollar consumer electronics industry for applications including cell phones, digital cameras, PDAs, MP3 players and other handheld electronic devices. The Company’s Mobion, 100% methanol feed, passive DMFC technology has been demonstrated in fully-functional prototypes and concept models in three primary product directions: external cord-free rechargeable power packs, attached fuel cell power sources and embedded micro fuel cell designs.

US is Global Leader in Mobile Internet Adoption, RAZR Phones Most Popular

Posted by Kim Poh Liaw on July 13th, 2008

40 million US mobile subscribers (15.6 percent) actively use the mobile Internet, making the US a leader in mobile Internet adoption, according to a report released today by The Nielsen Company. In 16 countries tracked, the US leads in penetration, followed by the UK (12.9 percent) and Italy (11.9 percent). Among other findings, Nielsen Mobile identified the top 10 US mobile websites as of May 2008.

    nielson-mobile-mobile-internet-july-2008

Nielsen Mobile, a service of The Nielsen Company, published the paper which examines the global mobile Internet market. Among other key takeaways of the report:

    • The US mobile Internet market, with 40 million active users, has reached a critical mass for mobile Internet marketing
    • The Motorola RAZR phones are the most popular phones among US mobile Internet users, while Nokia handsets lead the market in Europe and Asia
    • Unlimited data packages are increasingly popular with mobile Internet users. Today 14 percent of US subscribers access the mobile Internet with an unlimited data package, and 50 percent of data users say that they prefer the unlimited pricing model.
    • 3G networks drive user satisfaction with mobile Internet, and these networks improve data throughput speeds as much as six times, compared with 2 and 2.5G networks
    • Advertising is becoming a common part of the mobile Internet experience. Today 26 percent of mobile Internet users view ads while using the mobile Internet.
    • Mobile Internet users are more receptive to mobile advertising than average data users

“With highly capable devices, improving network speeds and millions of mobile users visiting individual websites over their phones, we believe mobile Internet reached a critical mass for mobile marketing this year,” said Nic Covey, director of insights at Nielsen Mobile and author of the report. “A confluence of factors will only further ignite this market, rapidly, this year and into 2009.”

The paper, “Critical Mass: The Worldwide State of the Mobile Web,” draws on Nielsen’s broad portfolio of mobile consumer and market research to provide insights on the universe, devices, data plans, network speeds, websites frequented and the mobile Internet marketing opportunity in the US and internationally.
